Brief History

The history of Mandapeta embraces the greatest personality in the person of Fr. Mathai Mathew Mappilakunnel who is well known as the modern intrepid apostle of East Godavari. It was he who initially laid the foundation. He extended his work far and wide from Yanam in 1958. Owing to his sincere and enthusiastic efforts a few Kamma people were baptized. He bought a house in Mandapeta in 1959 and began to stay there occasionally. Fr. John Kurandiarkunnel who was appointed as an assistant became the resident priest at Mandapeta Many more villages embraced Christianity during Fr. George Nellikunnel’s time. The new church and presbytery were built at Mandapeta in 1976.
